Where the HeartRich framework began — and the facets at the heart of its foundation.

2026 update: This piece represents the origin of the HeartRich framework — the thinking that eventually became the HeartRich Matrix and The Lattice Beneath the Matrix. The nine facets explored here are very much alive in the current work, expressed with greater precision and depth. If you want to see where this thinking evolved, start there. But this piece stands on its own — and the Resilience Compass and dials of influence remain among the most intuitive ways I know to explain what this work is actually for. The HeartRich Matrix →   The Lattice Beneath the Matrix →

We are often stretched to our limits — juggling high-pressure roles, family, relationships, finances, and health while trying to maintain some sense of clarity, balance, and connection to who we are at our core. Resilience — the capacity to return to our Authentic Selves in a state of calm and alignment after challenge, adversity, stress, or setback, again and again — has become one of the most critical capacities in life and leadership.

But real resilience isn’t about powering through or pretending everything is fine. And it isn’t a fixed trait that some people have and others don’t. It is the outcome of a dynamic, learnable set of principles, skills, and practices — one that touches every aspect of who you are and how you experience your life.

Over more than a decade of my own obsessive searching — through anxiety, depression, chronic physical conditions, and the gradual realization that there is no single lasting solution but that every approach carries forward something worth keeping — I began developing a systems approach to resilience. One that integrates the best of what I’d learned into something coherent, interconnected, and genuinely livable.

I eventually called it the HeartRich Resilience System. And the visual I built to represent it — the Resilience Compass with its nine interconnected facets — remains one of the clearest ways I know to show what this work is actually for.

Why Heart Is at the Center

At the heart of this system — literally — is not the ability to endure stress or outlast adversity, but the capacity to keep returning to your open-hearted, Authentic Self. The source of wisdom, courage, love, and genuine leadership in your life.

The heart is not only a metaphorical center. It is a psychophysiological bridge between mind, body, and spirit — the most powerful access point to the Authentic Self available to us. When we connect with the heart, we’re leveraging a resource that exists in every fiber of our being: capable of regulating the nervous system, calming the mind, restoring balance, and returning us to who we actually are beneath the stress, the protection, and the conditioning.

Safety makes Self accessible. Heart makes courage sustainable. That insight is as true now as when I first articulated it — and it runs through everything in this system.

The Resilience Compass

Imagine a compass guiding you not just to survive but to live deeply, meaningfully, and resiliently. The HeartRich Resilience Compass is organized around nine interconnected facets — most representing a core dimension of your inner world and how you lead your inner experience. Each facet operates on a spectrum, from a struggle state on one end to a strength state on the other.

The system works because the facets are mutually reinforcing. As you develop one, you naturally support growth in the others. And as you shift from the struggle side toward the strength side — even incrementally — your whole experience of yourself and your life begins to change.

This is not about perfection or sudden transformation. It is about turning the dials — gradually, consistently, in ways that compound over time.

Turning the Dials of Influence

Each facet is a dial — one you can learn to turn. Not all at once, and not by force, but through understanding, practice, and the gradual accumulation of new experience. The image below maps each dial from its struggle state on the left to its strength state on the right.

[Dials of influence image — struggle states and strength states]

The nine facets don’t activate in isolation. Turn the dial on one and you shift the conditions for all the others. Mind Mastery supports Conscious Presence. Somatic Regulation opens the door to Emotional Agility. Heart Coherence deepens access to the Authentic Self. Values alignment makes Effective Action meaningful rather than merely productive. The system is alive precisely because it is interconnected.

The Nine Facets

Here is a brief description of each facet — what it means to struggle in this area, and what becomes possible when you begin to shift.

Conscious Presence

Aware & Attuned

Struggle state — Absence & Detachment: Moving through life on autopilot, disconnected from your thoughts, emotions, and the people around you.

Strength state: Fully present, aware, and attuned — able to engage with life as it is actually happening, rather than as a blur you pass through.

Mind Mastery

Thought Management

Struggle state — Mind Mayhem: Consumed by racing, unhelpful thoughts, cognitive overload, and patterns of rumination that drain energy and distort reality.

Strength state: Able to observe, question, and redirect thought — working with the mind rather than being run by it.

Somatic Regulation

Balancing & Optimizing

Struggle state — Draining Dysregulation: The nervous system locked in chronic activation or shutdown — tense, depleted, reactive, unable to find genuine rest or recovery.

Strength state: A body and nervous system that can move through stress and return to balance — grounded, energized, and capable of riding life’s waves without being capsized by them. (See: Beyond Stress Management)

Emotional Agility

Facing & Feeling

Struggle state — Emotional Avoidance: Suppressing, bypassing, or numbing emotions — using unhealthy coping mechanisms to avoid what needs to be felt.

Strength state: Able to meet emotions with intelligence and courage — processing them rather than being controlled by them, and finding the genuine information they carry. (See: The Change Triangle)

Heart Coherence

Open & Positive

Struggle state — Destructive Looping: Stuck in negative emotional and mental loops — closed, contracted, reinforcing fear and disconnection.

Strength state: Heart and brain working in synchrony — open, warm, positively oriented, and genuinely connected to yourself and others. (See: The Power of Heart Coherence (HRV))

Authentic Self

Wise Loving Core

Struggle state — Self Deficiency: Living in survival mode, led by protective and reactive parts — the inner critic, perfectionist, people-pleaser — rather than from your wise, loving core.

Strength state: Leading from your truest, most compassionate essence — the Self that was never absent, only obscured. (See: Self Leadership?)

Nurturing Needs

Respecting & Owning

Struggle state — Neglecting Needs: Ignoring, forfeiting, or being unaware of your genuine needs — and the toll that takes on your self-esteem, energy, and wellbeing.

Strength state: Recognizing, respecting, and meeting your needs in healthy, sustainable ways — and understanding that doing so is not indulgence but integrity. (See: You Need to Value Your Needs and Values)

Honoring Values

Clarity & Alignment

Struggle state — Distorted Values: Driven by external pressures, fear, or conflicting motivations — living out of alignment with what actually matters, and feeling the erosion that follows.

Strength state: Clear about what you stand for, and building the courage to live it — even when something is at stake. (See: Values)

Effective Action

Meaningful Positive Progress

Struggle state — Ineffective Action: Avoiding, spinning, or taking action that doesn’t actually move you toward what matters — effort without direction, or avoidance dressed as busyness.

Strength state: Taking meaningful, values-aligned steps forward — reflecting on what works, learning from what doesn’t, and building the kind of momentum that compounds over time.

Where This Work Evolved

The nine facets of the Resilience Compass are still very much alive in the current HeartRich framework — reorganized, refined, and expressed with greater precision. The HeartRich Matrix maps six interconnected domains of Self Leadership, with heart at the center leading us back to the Authentic Self. The Lattice Beneath the Matrix describes the interdependent capacities, practices, and influences that support those domains.

Nothing was lost in that evolution. The compass became a matrix. The dials became a lattice. The heart remained at the center — as it always has — the expansive vector.

Becoming Who You Really Are

True resilience is not about being tough or unshakable. It is about being adaptable, authentic, and deeply connected to yourself — able to return to your open-hearted, Authentic Self as reliably and as fully as possible after life knocks you offline.

The HeartRich Resilience System doesn’t just build resilience. It helps you create a rich, meaningful, authentic life — one where your thoughts, emotions, actions, and values are increasingly in harmony, and where that harmony becomes the foundation from which you lead yourself and influence others.

Any of the nine facets can be your entry point. You don’t need to work on all of them at once. You need to start somewhere — and let the system do what systems do: each gain reinforcing the next, each return making the next return a little easier.

That’s what this work is for. And it’s available to you.

You walk into the room prepared. You’ve done the work, you know your material, you have something real to contribute. And then it happens — someone starts talking, or makes one quiet remark, and something in you just… goes.

When someone’s energy, their certainty, their one quiet remark made you go small and quiet — why it’s not just about you, and what it takes to stay yourself.

When burnout hits or toxic work takes its toll, you don’t fall apart randomly.

The parts of you that formed years ago to protect you from pain, shame, and helplessness — they step up. They take over. They do what they were built to do.

In the HeartRich framework, I call them your Inner Crews.

When stress hits, old defenses take over – overexplaining, people-pleasing, perfectionism, interrupting, even going silent and shutting down. The APPs MAP helps leaders understand these patterns and begin the inner work to reclaim calm, confidence, and choice so they can show up authentically and powerfully.
