What to Consider When Hiring a Coach

I want to share with you an insightful conversation I had with Executive & Career Coach Lynn Nicolai about Coaching. Our conversation was geared to those of you who’re thinking about hiring a coach but not sure how to decide what’s right for you.

Whether you’re feeling stuck in your career or a relationship, struggling to find balance or confidence or peace in your life, or simply seeking guidance to grow and unlock your full potential, choosing the right coach for you can make a massive difference.

We felt it important to have this talk because some of the challenges and issues people experience in their life actually also prevent them from finding a coach or moving forward in the coaching process. Examples like:

  • Fear of change, plain and simple
  • Feeling overwhelmed by life’s challenges and unsure of how to move forward.
  • Perfectionism and procrastination
  • Struggling to break free from limiting beliefs or patterns that are holding them back.
  • Feeling stuck in their career or personal life and unsure of how to achieve their goals.
  • Dealing with feelings of self-doubt or lack of confidence in their abilities.
  • Time constraints and busy schedules
  • Resistance to vulnerability
  • Skepticism and wondering if coaching is worth the investment of time and money, and if it will truly make a difference in their lives.

We’re both so passionate (and admittedly geeky) about coaching, and we delved deep into its nuances, sharing openly and candidly so you can get a sense of what it might be like to work with a coach. We offered valuable insights and practical tips to help you understand coaching better, and navigate the process of finding a coach that’s right for you.

Overview:

Lynn and I covered a wide range of topics related to coaching, starting with defining coaching, and exploring the fundamental question of how coaching differs from therapy, and how it can make a significant impact on a person’s mental and emotional wellbeing.

We discussed the importance of doing some prep work to understand your own needs, goals and aspirations before seeking out a coach, so you could have a really constructive discussion with the coaches you interview.

We touched on the transformative power of coaching and the long-term benefits it can bring to your life, as well as, the role of accountability and commitment in the coaching process.

Key Concepts and Insights:

One powerful concept that emerged from our conversation is the idea that coaching is not about getting answers, advice, and quick fixes but about growth, transformation and unlocking the potential within you.

We emphasized the importance of finding a coach who can help you tap into your inner resources and make meaningful changes in your life.

Another key insight is the role of self-awareness and self-reflection in the coaching process. By taking the time to understand your own needs and motivations, you can make more informed decisions about your coaching journey.

We discussed the topic of fit and the importance of safety, trust and rapport in the coach-client relationship. We highlighted the value of feeling seen and heard by your coach, as well as the importance of clear communication, agreements and boundaries.

We also challenged the cliché that all coaches do is ask powerful questions and trust that coachees always have all the answers. We shared candidly about several competencies and qualities we bring to each coaching conversation: presence, compassion, courage, deep listening, keen observation, finding your blindspots, offering feedback and the role of teaching or telling sparingly, and more.

Finally, we explored the question of investment and commitment, and the cost of not changing and tolerating the status quo.

If you’re feeling inspired to explore coaching and unlock your full potential, I encourage you to watch the full video. In it, you’ll find even more valuable insights and practical tips to help you choose the right coach for you.
