The Lattice Beneath the Matrix
The interwoven capacities, skills & practices that support Self-led living
Strengthening the Lived Abilities That Support Authenticity, Resilience & Wellbeing
The HeartRich Matrix describes the architecture of Self Leadership.
The Lattice describes the interwoven capacities and influences that support, strengthen and give life to that architecture — the lived abilities that make access to Self possible.
None of this is proprietary, partisan, or prophetic.
These capacities draw from established psychological, relational, and even ancient contemplative traditions. I reference them openly in my work, so you can explore further if you’re curious.
You don’t need to master all of this.
You don’t need to do it in order.
You don’t need to rush.
Growth here is incremental and cumulative.
You take what resonates and feels right for you.
The rest will still be here.
At its core, this work strengthens access to Self — to clarity, courage, connection, and potential, however you define that.
The Gateway: Awareness & Presence
You cannot lead what you cannot see.
Under stress, attention narrows. We live in our heads. We contract and react before we notice.
Awareness restores the simple but powerful ability to notice what is happening inside you — thoughts, emotion, activation — before it runs you.
This is where the space between stimulus and response becomes available again.
It’s what makes “get out of your head and into your heart” possible.
Without awareness, change becomes force or pressure.
With awareness, choice returns.
What awareness reveals is often pre-conscious, protective patterning. As awareness strengthens, space naturally widens — creating a buffer that makes access to clarity, choice, and expansion possible.
This capacity is foundational. Everything else builds from here.
Awareness and presence are cultivated through mindfulness practice, attentional training, reflective inquiry, and learning to observe thoughts, sensations, and impulses without immediate reaction. As awareness strengthens, it supports every other domain — regulation, emotional integration, perspective, and choice.
Understanding Protective Patterns & Emotional Integration
Most high-capacity, high-achieving adults are being run by patterns that once protected them.
- Overdrive
- Perfectionism
- Self-criticism
- Control
- People-pleasing
- Avoidance
- Withdrawal
- Over-giving
These strategies were intelligent. They preserved safety, belonging, worth, or dignity at some point in your life.
But what once protected can eventually confine.
With awareness in place, you can begin to see these patterns, and become curious about them rather than fight them.
Emotions become rich information instead of threats.
Needs become respected signals instead of weaknesses.
Protective parts become valued collaborators instead of enemies.
As emotional integration deepens, access to Self becomes more consistent, and compassion for who we are, as we are, increases.
And the system reorganizes continuously.
This work draws from parts-based approaches (e.g. IFS), emotional processing models, and experiential psychodynamic traditions (e.g. AEDP). Through compassionate curiosity, identifying defenses, working with needs, and restoring self-compassion, protective patterns soften and reorganize rather than being fought or suppressed.
Nervous System Regulation & Safety
Insight alone is never enough.
Though understanding often does increase our sense of clarity, it doesn’t replace safety.
The nervous system must experience steadiness and the absence — or at least reduction — of threat, for Self to remain accessible.
This includes:
- Learning to recognize activation in real time.
- Expanding tolerance for stress and discomfort.
- Returning to balance more quickly.
- Strengthening heart-brain coherence.
- Supporting the social engagement system — the biological state that allows connection, clarity, compassion, and cooperation.
Regulation is not suppression.
It is stability and agility.
It does not only mean calm. It includes healthy activation and energy — the kind that allows for excitement, joy, and engagement without overwhelm.
From stability, understanding deepens, becomes embedded, and sustainable. Enabling and reinforcing inner trust.
Regulation is strengthened through heart-coherence practices, polyvagal informed practices, breathwork, somatic awareness, stress-recovery rituals, movement, and co-regulating relational experiences. As physiological safety increases, insight stabilizes and Self remains accessible under greater pressure.
Thought, Meaning & Perspective
Interpretation shapes experience.
Two people can live the same event and experience entirely different realities based on meaning.
This capacity strengthens your relationship to thought.
Instead of being fused with every narrative, you gain flexibility.
You notice:
“This is a thought.”
“This is a story.”
“This is an interpretation.”
Perspective widens.
Rigidity softens.
Identity loosens where it has hardened.
Awareness makes this possible.
Regulation makes it tolerable.
Self makes it liveable.
Flexibility and agility here develop through awareness and acceptance development, cognitive defusion practices, narrative reflection, values-based inquiry, and structured meaning-making exercises. As your relationship to thought changes, identity becomes less rigid and choice becomes more available.
Values, Will & Courageous Action
As protective patterns soften and awareness strengthens, authentic values become clearer.
Not imposed values.
Not inherited values.
Both lived and aspirational values — who we want to be, reflected in who we already are but have not yet fully experienced.
Clarity without action, without experience, does not build self-trust.
So you begin to experiment – with curiosity, courage, and commitment to what really matters.
To take small, aligned actions.
To satisfy needs and honor values directly.
To feel the difference between reactive living and values-led living.
Each aligned action builds trust.
Each experiment strengthens will.
Each rep dissolves unconscious limits that no longer serve.
From here, potential becomes accessible — not as pressure, but as possibility.
Values are clarified through structured reflection, experiential exercises, small behavioral experiments, and committed-action practices. Each aligned action strengthens self-trust and reinforces the shift from reactive living to intentional living.
Relational Presence & Communication
How you relate — how you feel and behave in relationship to others — reveals which part of you is leading.
Self-led presence shows up in:
- Spontaneous compassion.
- Respect for others and ourselves.
- Clear boundaries.
- Honest communication.
- Regulated disagreement.
- Openness and love without collapse.
- Strength without bracing or aggression.
Relationships become less about protection and more about connection and mutual giving and receiving.
Influence becomes steadier. We co-regulate.
Trust deepens — in yourself and in others.
Our relational capacities are cultivated through Nonviolent Communication, boundary practices, attachment awareness, rupture-and-repair work, and nervous system literacy in moments of tension. As internal and relational steadiness increases, compassion is nurtured, and influence becomes more grounded and mutual.
Positive States & Coherent Living
Many capable adults know how to push and endure.
Fewer know how to let go and feel good without bracing.
We are biologically wired to survive before we thrive.
Contraction comes easily. Expansion requires cultivation.
Positive, coherent states are not accidents.
They are trainable.
Warmth.
Appreciation.
Gratitude.
Curiosity.
Joy that doesn’t require defense.
Strength without armor.
These are not sentimental states.
They are regenerative states.
When practiced intentionally, they strengthen heart–brain coherence and stabilize open presence. They remind the nervous system that openness is safe — that life is not only something to endure, but something to participate in.
This is not forced optimism.
It is not denial of difficulty.
It is expansion beyond contraction.
As protective intelligence softens and coherent positive states are practiced, something generative begins to move.
Self is an integrative, healing force in us.
This expansive movement — the + — is how that force expresses itself.

From here, resilience deepens.
Renewal and wellbeing are fostered.
Relationships warm.
Creativity returns.
Access to our potential increases.
Practices such as gratitude training, appreciation, savoring, curiosity cultivation, play, and heart-focused coherence exercises strengthen this expansive vector. These practices reinforce regulation, deepen resilience, and stabilize open-hearted presence.
Many of these practices cultivate multiple domains at once. For example, awareness strengthens regulation and emotion-processing. Heart-coherence strengthens emotional integration, nervous system balance, and relational presence. Nonviolent Communication reinforces needs awareness, values fulfillment, regulation, compassion, and perspective simultaneously. This is why the system functions as a lattice rather than separate tracks.
A Living System
These capacities are not separate tracks. They are interdependent and overlapping.
Awareness supports regulation.
Regulation supports integration.
Integration clarifies values.
Values guide action.
Action reshapes our understanding of what’s possible.
Relational presence stabilizes growth.
Positive states reinforce heart and resilience.
This is a living system.
It evolves as you do.
Ecosystem & Ongoing Learning
In coaching, I often refer clients to books, practices, and teachings connected to these capacities.
Growth does not depend on one source.
You are not meant to be dependent on a single guide.
Take what resonates.
Return when curious.
Leave what doesn’t fit.
Your inner intelligence knows what it’s ready for.
Influences & Lineage
This work draws from established psychological and relational traditions, including:
- Internal Family Systems (IFS)
- Polyvagal Theory
- Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Nonviolent Communication (NVC)
- Attachment Theory
- Positive Psychology
- Somatic and relational neuroscience
- Trauma-informed neuroscience, psychodynamic and experiential therapies (AEDP, ISTDP, EMDR), and mind–body medicine
- Mindfulness, meditation, and contemplative psychology (MBSR and related traditions)
None of these are rebranded or hidden.
They are integrated.
Integration
This work does not add something foreign.
It restores access.
When protective intelligence relaxes, clarity returns.
With clarity, courage becomes natural.
With courage, alignment strengthens.
From alignment, strength, warmth, and potential emerge naturally.
You are not becoming someone else.
You are regaining access to what has been there all along.
Where To From Here?
Start where there is challenge.
Start where there is curiosity.
Start where something is calling.
Growth begins with awareness.
